Liberty Classic
The 2009 Liberty classic was held at Queens College this year. The event once again grew in numbers. This event kicks off the 09 season for the New York Traditional Karate League. Sensei Herb Wiles was pleased with the attendance. In addition to the event Clay Morton taught a Shotokan Kata clinic on the day before.
The NYTKL is bringing together athletes and instructors in a fair and well-run event. Sensei George Aschkar and the board are systemizing the league events and in it’s second year participants have come to expect a level of organization that is consistent with rules, volunteers, officiating. Building on previous success the events begin and end in timely fashion.
Sensei Kai Leung, Cedric Barksdale, Cleve Baxter, George Aschkar were but a few of the many instructors on hand supporting this event. Queens College is a large facility providing good visibility and a warm up area. The level of the athletes is consistently improving, as is the officiating at these events. New York karateka are able to attend and compete at many events of this caliber thank to the organizational efforts.
Sensei Wiles was pleased that his Student Cheryl Murphy successfully defended her champion title. Cheryl a USA-NKF team member has been doing very well earning medals at international events. Other top winners included Danny Luna, Brian and Raj Ramrup.

Looking ahead to next year the event will be back at York College and a special treat with guest instructor from England WKF World Champion Wayne Otto undoubtedly one of the most successful karateka ever. Otto is also a coach for the England team who has worked closely with Ticky Donovan. His seminars are among the best attended. Plan on the 2010 Liberty Classic to start your year of on the right foot.
