Grassroots YODP Karate Training
Youth Olympic Development Program
By Gene Tibon
President
On April 4th, 2009 JKR Okaigan Dojo and the USANKF of Northern California hosted our 2nd USANKF membership drive and our Grassroots “YODP” Karate Seminar with Sensei Hideharu Igaki, USANKF National Coach and Grassroots National Development Coach at the Fremont High School Gym in Saratoga, California.
We had about 50 athletes and coaches participating in the developmental camp for junior Black belts ages 12-18yrs old. Many of the coaches and athletes worked in rotating stations with different training drills that were developed at the Olympic Training Center.
Sensei Igaki worked with the coaches separately for a while giving them different training ideas for their athletes to take back to their dojos for some training ideas for their dojo students. The main purpose is to help educate the Northern California dojo Sensei’s with ideas for expanding their programs.
We are currently working with Washington ASO, Oregon ASO, Arizona ASO, Louisiana ASO, Southern California ASO, and others in helping them develop their Grassroots YODP Karate Program in their various Approved Sports Organizations.
Sensei Mary Crawford hosted a series of seminars for beginners, Intermediates, adults, and USANKF of Northern California partnered with her to sanction a seminar for our Northern California advance athletes.
Working together with Sensei Crawford it gave work her students and others from area dojo’s to participate in Kata training and Kumite training at the different levels to work with all ages and level of athletes. We were lucking in have USA Team member Mina Yamazaki working with athletes in Kata, Northern California RSO coaches Mari-jo Suzuki, Tess Karsavar, David Kaneda, Andrew Moore, Brian Embry, and a host of other coaches who donated their time to with our advance juniors.
We were also lucky to have Dr. Steven Lee, a member of the USA National Karate Federation Medical Team on hand to video the training for our athletes and coaches for their training reference.
What we have is a very unique situation of outstanding people volunteering their time and for the love of Karate in developing these athletes to be competitive at the USA Team Trials. Many are already on the Jr. National Team Pool and are sharpening their tools to hopefully make the team to El Salvador for the Junior Pan-American championships, and the Cadet World Championships in Morocco.
